Professor of English at Ohio University, Darrell Spencer won the 1998 Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction for a collection of stories titled Blood Work. The award, presented annually by the University of Georgia Press, is among the most prestigious in the United States for a collection of short stories. Spencer joined Ohio University's faculty in 1997 and teaches creative writing. He is the author of other collections of stories, A Woman Packing a Pistol, published in 1986, Our Secret's Out, published in 1993, and Caution, Men in Trees, published in 2000.
