Francis has made a career out of his love for horses, and has written many books based on a horse racing. His novels include: Decider, Driving Force, Hot Money, Break In, Bonecrack, Whip Hand and many others.

Francis discusses the differences between his two books Money and Proof in this 1985 interview. Proof is a well-structured book with a defined beginning, middle, and end while Money is a chain of consciousness without a specific plot. He uses,as several mystery authors do, several red herrings to keep the reader guessing at all times. Swaim and Francis also discuss the different liquor licenses in the United States and England.
