|
Elaine Steinbeck, wife of John Steinbeck for the last twenty years of his life, is the editor of Steinbeck: A Life in Letters. She talks with Don Swaim about John Steinbeck on the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Grapes of Wrath. She tells the story of falling in love with him and eventually marrying him. Elaine Steinbeck says that John Steinbeck did not consider himself an intellectual and notes that many leading intellectuals of his time objected to his winning the Nobel Prize. Steinbeck was fascinated with the legends of King Arthur. She remembers his habit of always trying to invent a better way of doing things around the house and in the garden. Listen
