In this 1984 interview with Don Swaim, James Purdy talks of his childhood, where he finds inspiration for characters and the troubles of becoming a published writer. He discusses the origins of 63: Dream Palace and Malcolm, which were two of his first novels. Purdy also performs one of his poems.

James Purdy discusses the characters and themes in his book Garments the Living Wear, which takes place in New York city in the 1980s. He based many people in the book on actors whom he had met when performing his plays off broadway. James also discusses growing up in Ohio, the often times cruel responses from critics to his work and his ongoing problems with publishers.
