For Luck

from Field Stones
by Robert Kinsley

All day I've
tried hard
to imagine
what I can
never fully
imagine.  It
goes something
like this--divers
are dragging
the river at flood
stage for nearly
a week.  My son
out walking
the dog on her
leash too close
to the water, he
does, the dog
pulling hard,
the splash of this
is what I imagine,
but what I
cannot is
the after.
